How to use it
- Enter the percentage, or the score as points earned over points possible, like 45/50.
- Pick your school's grading scale. Most US schools use A+ to F with plus and minus.
- Read the letter grade and its GPA points. The chart highlights the row and shows where the next grade up starts.
The grading scale
On the most common US scale, 90–100% is an A, 80–89% a B, 70–79% a C, 60–69% a D and below 60% an F. Plus and minus split each band: 97% and up is an A+, 93–96% an A and 90–92% an A-, and B, C and D split the same way.
Some schools leave out plus and minus, and some use a 7-point scale where an A starts at 93%, a B at 85%, a C at 77% and a D at 70%. Pick a scale above to see its chart.
What percent is an A?
On the standard scale an A is 93–96%, an A- is 90–92% and an A+ is 97% and up, so any score from 90% is some kind of A. On a 7-point scale an A needs 93%.
In a GPA, an A and an A+ are both worth 4.0 points and an A- is worth 3.7.
Turning a score into a percentage
Divide the points earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. 45 out of 50 is 90%, an A-. 37 out of 45 is 82.2%, a B-.
