How to use it

  1. Enter your current grade in the class as a percentage.
  2. Enter the final exam's weight, the share of the course grade it counts for. It's in your syllabus.
  3. Enter the grade you want to finish with and read the score you need on the final.

How the final grade is calculated

Your course grade after the final is your current grade times the share of the course already done, plus your final exam score times the final's weight. Solving that for the exam score gives: score needed = (grade you want − current grade × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

Say you have an 84% and the final is worth 25%. For a 90% overall you need (90 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 108% on the final, which isn't possible. For an 85% you need (85 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 88%.

When the final exam counts for a lot

The bigger the final's weight, the further one exam can move your grade, in both directions. With a final worth 40%, a student on 75% needs 87.5% on the exam for a B. A 50% on the same exam drops them to 65%, a D.

The table under the result shows the score you need for each letter grade, so you can see what's realistic before you plan your revision.

FAQ

What if the score I need is over 100%?

Then the grade you want can't be reached with the final alone, unless there's extra credit. The calculator shows the best grade you can still finish with if you get 100% on the final.

Where do I find the final exam weight?

In the syllabus or on the course page, usually as a percentage of the final grade. If your teacher uses points, divide the final's points by the course's total points and multiply by 100.

Should I enter my weighted grade?

Enter the grade your gradebook shows now. It already includes the weights of everything before the final. To work it out from your scores, use the weighted grade calculator.

Can I use letter grades?

Enter percentages. If you only know a letter, use your school's cut-off for it, for example 90 for an A on a 10-point scale.
