How to use it
- Enter the number of questions or points on the test or quiz.
- Type how many the student got wrong, or press W for each wrong answer as you mark.
- Read the percentage and letter grade, then press R or Next paper to grade the next test.
How to calculate a test grade
Subtract the number wrong from the number of questions, divide by the number of questions and multiply by 100. A 25-question quiz with 3 wrong is 22 ÷ 25 = 0.88, or 88%.
Points work the same way. A test out of 60 points where a student lost 9 scores 51 ÷ 60 = 85%. Enter the total points as the number of questions and the points lost as the number wrong.
An online EZ grader
For decades teachers have graded with a cardboard slide chart, the E-Z Grader: slide it to the number of questions and read the percentage next to each number wrong. This easy grader does the same job without the slider. The chart under the score lists every possible number wrong for the test you entered, with the current paper highlighted.
Print the chart to keep next to a stack of papers, or leave this page open and mark with the keyboard: W for each wrong answer, R for the next paper.
Letter grades and the grading scale
The letter grade uses the common US grading scale: 90% and up is an A, 80–89% a B, 70–79% a C, 60–69% a D and below 60% an F. Within each band the top three points get a plus and the bottom three a minus, so 87% is a B+ and 82% is a B-.
Schools set their own cut-offs, so check the syllabus when a score sits right on a boundary.
FAQ
What grade is 7 out of 10?
70%, a C-. Enter 10 questions and 3 wrong to see it, along with every other score on a 10-question test.
How many questions can you miss and still get an A?
On a 20-question test, 2 wrong is 90%, the lowest A-. For any other test, enter the number of questions and find the last row of the chart with an A.
Is an easy grader the same as an EZ grader?
Yes. Both names come from the E-Z Grader slide chart, and teachers use them for any chart or test grader that turns the number wrong into a percentage. This one also gives the letter grade.
Can I grade with half points?
Yes. Tick Half points and the chart shows every half step. The +½ wrong button, or the H key, takes off half a point.
Does it round the percentage?
By default the score is rounded to a whole percent, the way most gradebooks show it. Choose 1 or 2 decimal places to see more. The letter grade always matches the number shown.
Can I use points instead of questions?
Yes. Enter the total points as the number of questions and the points taken off as the number wrong.
Are the grades saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is worked out in your browser, and nothing is kept once you close the page.
