How to use it
- Choose the letter grade for each class. Add credits only if your classes count for different amounts.
- Set each class's level: regular, Honors, or AP or IB.
- Read your GPA. For your cumulative GPA, add your GPA and credits from earlier semesters.
How to calculate GPA in high school
Turn each letter grade into grade points: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on down to F = 0. Multiply each class's points by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits.
Six one-credit classes with an A, A-, B+, B, B and C come to (4.0 + 3.7 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 2.0) ÷ 6 = 19 ÷ 6 = 3.17.
Weighted vs. unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA counts every class on the same 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA adds points for harder classes, usually 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrollment classes, so an A in AP Biology counts as 5.0. That's how a weighted GPA goes above 4.0.
This calculator adds the extra points to every passing grade. Schools set their own rules: some weight only a C or better, and some put an A+ at 4.3. Check your school's handbook if the result doesn't match your transcript.
Cumulative GPA
Your cumulative GPA covers every semester so far, not just this one, weighted by credits. With a 3.4 over 12 credits before and a 3.8 this semester over 6 credits, it's (3.4 × 12 + 3.8 × 6) ÷ 18 = 3.53.
FAQ
What GPA is a 90?
A 90% is an A-, which is 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. From 93% it's an A, worth 4.0.
What percentage is a 3.6 GPA?
There's no exact conversion, because a GPA averages letter grades rather than percentages. A 3.6 sits between a B+ (3.3, 87–89%) and an A- (3.7, 90–92%), so it's roughly a 90% average.
What does cumulative GPA mean?
It's the GPA of every class you've taken so far, across all semesters, weighted by credits. Enter your GPA and credits so far under the classes to see it.
Do I need to enter credits?
No. Leave them empty and every class counts as one credit. Fill them in if some classes count for more or less, like a half-year class worth 0.5.
Is 4.0 the highest GPA?
On an unweighted scale, yes. With Honors and AP classes weighted, a GPA can go up to 5.0.
