Easy Grader

Average grade calculator

Type or paste a list of grades to get the average, the median and how many fall at each letter grade.

Leave empty if the grades are percentages. Scores written like 45/50 work either way.

Type or paste the grades, for example a column copied from a spreadsheet.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type the grades one per line, or paste a column from your gradebook or a spreadsheet.
  2. If the grades are raw points, enter the points possible so each one is turned into a percentage.
  3. Read the average and its letter grade, with the median, highest, lowest and letter-grade counts below.

How to calculate a grade average

Add up the grades and divide by how many there are. For 92, 85 and 78 that's 255 ÷ 3 = 85%.

If the grades are out of different totals, turn each into a percentage first: 45/50 is 90% and 18/25 is 72%, so their average is 81%. Adding up the points instead, 63 out of 75 or 84%, gives the longer test more say. That's a weighted average.

Class average, median and grade distribution

A teacher checking how a test went usually wants more than the class average. The median is the middle score once they're sorted, so one paper far below the rest doesn't drag it down the way it drags the average. For 92, 88, 85, 81 and 40 the average is 77.2% but the median is 85%.

The letter-grade table counts how many grades fall in each band on the usual scale, where 90% and up is an A and below 60% is an F.

Average grade vs. weighted grade

This calculator counts every grade the same. If your syllabus gives categories different weights, for example tests 50%, quizzes 30% and homework 20%, use the weighted grade calculator so each category counts for its share.

FAQ

How do I find the average of my grades?

Add them up and divide by how many there are, or type them into the box above. 90, 84 and 75 average to 83%.

Can I paste grades from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copy the column of grades and paste it in. Names or other text copied with them are left out, and the calculator lists what it left out.

What's the difference between the average and the median?

The average adds every grade and divides by the count. The median is the middle grade when they're sorted. When a few scores are far from the rest, the median is closer to the typical student.

How do I average grades out of different points?

Type each one as a score like 18/20 or 45/50. Each is turned into a percentage before averaging, so a short quiz counts as much as a long test. To count by points, use the weighted grade calculator with the points possible as the weights.

Are the grades sent anywhere?

No. The average is worked out in your browser, and the grades are gone when you close the page.
